if you are a beginner and want to play blues, get this book. Each page contains a full boogie progression, with turnaround. Yes, some of them are very similar, but yet, it’s a great way to practice. If you have a loop machine, you can record the boogie lines and just play solos or rhythm along with it. My only complain is that Dave should have included some more complex boogie lines by the end of the book. Anyway, this will help you get that boogie feel so you can experiment with this kind of blues guitar. I’m pleased with this book, since it is the only one I found specifically of boogie lines.

I am at the stage in my playing where I want to move from just playing chords to also doing a bit of picking. This book is perfect. It gets you playing what seem like bass lines and I suppose they are too. Anyway, it has made me, for example, go and find all the E’s on my fretboard. And B’s. And so on. The riffs can seem similar but they still get your fingers moving and, in some cases, force you to finger pick.
Sometimes the chord progression may not stick to a I,IV,V sort of thing. You might get one that is I, IV, I, VII, Iv, I.
One thing I will say here is that if you just whizz through the book and don’t take time to study what you have learnt then you will probably miss the boat with what the book intends.
If you are an intermediate player then this book may not make its mark with you. But for a beginner, perfect. I see an earlier reviewer looked down his nose at this book as it seems “too simple”. Well, what can I say. I get a bigger kick out of John Fogerty’s guitar playing than I get out of John McLaughlins playing. I hope I have made my point.

I gave it three stars based on it’s value to me personally. This is strictly for the beginner in my opinion. Any intermediate worth his salt could take the basic boogie line in E (You know the one!) and come up with 25 simple variations in no time. Probably half of them would match ones in this book. And the other half would be just as good. Some of the lines have riffs in them also but still not too difficult. Again, for the beginner only!
